New Role Enables Katko to Continue Efforts to Mitigate Flood Risks, Bolster Economic Development in CNY

WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) today was named Ranking Member on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management.

The Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management conducts oversight of the federal response to emergencies and natural disasters, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Additionally, it has jurisdiction over agencies and programs dedicated to promoting economic development in communities suffering economic distress, such as the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC)— an economic development partnership between the Federal Government and regional state and local governments designed to help reduce economic distress and encourage private-sector job creation throughout designated northern counties of New York, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

“I am humbled and honored to be named Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management,” said Rep. Katko.  “With jurisdiction over the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Northern Border Regional Commission, I am eager to work with members on both sides of the aisle to continue my work to mitigate flood risks in our region and bolster economic development in Central New York. I thank Ranking Member Graves for this opportunity and am looking forward to working alongside Chairwoman Dina Titus in the coming days.”

“Congressman Katko is one of the hardest working Members of our Committee, and I am excited for this opportunity to add him to the ranks of our Republican leadership,” said Rep. Graves, Ranking Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.  “This subcommittee has broad oversight of programs that impact the lives of Americans in numerous ways.  John’s experience will help him lead this subcommittee in its work to improve how our communities prepare for and recover from disasters, foster economic development in distressed regions across the country, and save taxpayer dollars through more effective management of federal office space and property.”

Since coming to Congress, Rep. Katko has served on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and has worked with state and federal officials, including the Administrator of FEMA, to mitigate flood risks in Lake Ontario shoreline communities. Rep. Katko has continuously advocated for increased funding to support economic development in our region, and to ensure Cayuga, Wayne, and Oswego Counties are included in the Northern Border Regional Commission.

As a result of his advocacy, last year Rep. Katko announced $500,000 in NBRC funding to support water infrastructure improvements in Wayne County and $500,000 to promote revitalization and tourism efforts in City of Auburn.

Rep. Katko will continue serving in his capacity as Ranking Member on the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Innovation, and as a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittees on Aviation and on Highways and Transit.
